Robert Haule

Elias Sill Hawley states in THE HAWLEY RECORD:

In Farmer’s First Settlers of New England, pg 38, he says under the name of Hauley, which was the frequent spelling then of the Hawley name: “Robert, whose name in the colony records is spelled Haule, was admitted freeman in 1644.”  This man may have removed to Rhode Island, as tradition intimates, and the family of Samuel Holly may be descended from him.

A hypothesis at one point in time suggested that Robert Haule was a brother to Joseph Hawley (1603-1690).     Robert may be the ancestor of a separate Holley lineage, but today’s DNA evidence would suggest that he was not closely related to the Massachusetts or Connecticut branches of the Hawley family.
