Hawley Genealogy, starting with Joseph, b.1603, Parwich, Derbyshire, England

Notes

HAWLEY

The progenitor of this, the largest Hawley family in America, has not been
determined with any certanty.
An inventory of Samuel Haule of Charlestown,
Massachusetts, dated in 1637, had been obtained, and as the date was early
enough, it was thought this man might be the father of the first family of
Hawley's in Roxbury, particularly since the spelling of Haule for Hawley had
been found. The second reason was that, being in correspondence with several
Hawley families of Derbyshire, England, it was strongly hoped that the
emigration of the whole family might be obtained through them. This hope has
not been realized, although some information as to the existance of the family
name from the date of the emigration to the present time, in that country, has
been obtained as may be seen in the account of the English Family in the first
part of this book.@12
There has been some reports that Samuel Hawley, born about
1577 in Parwich, Derbyshire, England, was the progenitor or it was Thomas
Hawley or it was Joseph Hawley who married Katherine Booth. There has been no
documentation for any of these persons.
A letter from the Derbyshire County Council in England states that the
Registers of the Parwich parish begin only in 1640, the earlier registers did
not survive and no reference to Joseph or his parents have been found in the
Office's personal names index.@13

Robert [Haule] HAWLEY

He was a Congregationalist and may have removed to Rhode Island, as
tradition indicates and the family of Samuel Holly, as given on page 423 of
the HR, may be descended from him.@12
Robert, whose name in the colony records is spelled Haule, was admitted
freeman in 1644.@13
