THE HAWLEY RECORD was originally set up with the Connecticut line divided into branches.   Each branch represented one of the fifteen sons or grandsons of Joseph Hawley (1603-1690).     It was the grandson’s generation that significantly began moving beyond the confines of Stratford, ultimately settling much of Connecticut.    The reason for this is easy to understand.   The family members continued to acquire available land, and had to move beyond Stratford to do so.    The Hawley family became one of the largest land holders in the Colony of Connecticut.

The branches are :

  • Joseph Hawley
    • Samuel, son of Joseph
      1. Samuel, Jr, son of Samuel
      2. Capt Joseph, son of Samuel
      3. Deacon Thomas, son of Samuel
      4. Ebenezer, son of Samuel
      5. Jehiel, son of Samuel
      6. Ephraim, son of Samuel
      7. Stephen, son of Samuel
      8. Benjamin, son of Samuel
      9. Nathaniel, son of Samuel
    • Ebenezer, son of Joseph
    • Ephraim, son of Joseph
      • Daniel, son of Ephraim (#10 on map)
      • Gideon, son of Ephraim (#11 on map)
    • Capt John, son of Joseph
      • Henry Sr, son of Capt John (#12 on map)
      • John Jr, son of Capt John (#13 on map)
      • Nathan, son of Capt John (#14 on map)
      • Joseph, son of Capt John (#15 on map)

We are fortunate to have members from all the Connecticut lines.   There tend to be more descendants of Samuel, son of Joseph, based on his having nine sons who went on to have children that survived.    We have also have members from the Massachusetts line of Thomas, who was Joseph’s brother, as well as those whose ancestry it still being researched, and descendants of later Hawley immigration.

The map of Connecticut below shows the migration of the various branches of the Hawley family throughout the state.

Judy (Hawley) Kauffeldt - I have been looking for family back ground for Capt Jehiel Hawley Sr. I am 8 or 9 generation of Jehiel, I think. Is this the same Jehiel Hawley that you have listed as son of Sammuel?ReplyCancel

      admin - Hello Judy!
Jehiel Hawley, son of Samuel, son of Joseph, lived 1712-1777 and was the founder of Arlington, Vermont. Jehiel Hawley, son of Ephraim, son of Joseph, was his cousin and lived 1685-1727. Jehiel Hawley, son of Joseph, son of Samuel, son of Joseph, lived 1711-1761. As is often the case, there are many family members with the same or similar names. There are many more Jehiels in subsequent generations.

If you can share more information, we can try to help you sort out which one may be your ancestor.ReplyCancel

      admin - Judy,
It seems as if you are on the right track. Our records show James Castle Hawley as opposed to Asahel James Hawley. It also shows Manson as Gordon Manson. Please let us know how we can help!

admin - Another point, Jeptha Rogers Hawley’s middle name was Rogers, as opposed to Roger. It was his mother’s maiden name.ReplyCancel

Judy (hawley) Kauffeldt - I have Jeptha Rogers 1805- married Mary Ann Horton B1806 and then their son Asahel James B1834- married Annie Dodge in 1860 (father Charles Dodge). Does the Birthdates match the name you have (Jsmes Castle Hawley)? I have no James Castle in my search. I only have five childrean listed for Jeptha and Mary (Horton), should I have more?

Manson is my Grandfather, all documents have him listed as Manson Gordon Hawley, I looked on the original marriage license, and it is also written this way, and his father’s name written Thomas D Hawley ( I do not know what the “D” stands for, or what his wife Florence McFalls middle name would be. It is listed on her tombstone as “J”.
